• There are around 16,650 landscape contractor companies, but this does not take into account the parks and open spaces (both public and private), the historic and botanic parks and sports turf facilities
• 81% of business employ fewer than 10 people
• 60% of the workforce at over the age of 40 (36% over 50)
• 88% of horticulture, landscaping and sports turf are men

• People are not going abroad as much so there has been a big rise in domestic gardens and allotments
• Public parks are being used more and more. What’s more 72% of visitors are happy with the condition of their facilities
• The British weather can have a huge impact on the industry. The last two poor summers has seen a drop off in visitors to horticulture attractions and activities. But that also means a good summer can be great for the industry
• Apprenticeships in the industry are increasing, providing lots of opportunities for new people
• The general public, as well as career advisors, often see the industry as low skilled and lacking in opportunities. But it is because it is such a wide-ranging industry that it can be difficult to see what kinds of jobs are available.
