Veterinary Activities Skills Needs
Our research leads the way in understanding your skills needs.
Clear information on the changes to the veterinary nursing training scheme and legislation
You told us the changes to the veterinary nursing training scheme will create a lot of uncertainty. You want clear information on how the scheme can be accessed by apprentices and employed staff.
You also said the potential changes to the Veterinary Surgeons Act could lead to the need for extra skills and qualifications for Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs). Under the act, RVNs will be required to do tasks that used to only be done by veterinary surgeons.
Ways of recruiting and retaining qualified veterinary nurses
You told us it’s not difficult to recruit student veterinary nurses and lay-staff, but for some practices the recruitment of qualified RVNs is challenging.
We need to work together to promote the role of the RVN as bringing value to the practice team if allowed to work to their full potential.
Relevant training to compete with retailers of medication, diets and linked sales
Veterinary practices can offer more than caring for our pets, they can offer specialised diets, medication, tags and more. However you told us there is stiff competition from online stores, supermarkets and pet shops and so employees need the added skills of marketing, customer care, website design and dispensing of medication.
Clear guidance on sources and access to funding
We have been listening. You said it was complicated and time-consuming to find funding and support for you and your business. We have created a special tool that does some of the hard work for you and points you in the right direction.
