Husband and wife Andrew and Allison Tyrrell attended a lamb cutting course at Food Centre Wales near Llandysul to add value to the lamb that they produce.
The lambs the Tyrell family produce will be slaughtered at their local abattoir, and Allison and her husband can now process the carcasses at home and sell them locally through a box scheme, adding value to every lamb they produce.
The Tyrrell family farm a 220 acre unit on the Gower peninsular called Lower Hardingsdown Farm. They have a flock of 60 ewes but also buy in a large number of store lambs for finishing.
One of the requirements to enrol on the course was that they completed the Level 2 Food Hygiene course first. They received 80% funding for both the Food Hygiene and the lamb cutting courses through the Farming Connect Skills Development Programme.
Allison said: “The 80% funding has allowed both my husband and I to complete a lamb cutting course which has been a real help financially. The application for funding was straight forward and easy and I would recommend all farming businesses to take up the opportunity of subsidised training.”
