28 year old Laurie Birt works fulltime with his father and Uncle on their 600 acre mixed farm in Kent, which farms cereals and potatoes and silage grass and maize for their herd 130 suckler cows.
Laurie is considering further training including BASIS as keeping his skills up to date is vital to the business particularly whilst there is funding available.
Now in its third generation Laurie and his brother who works part time for the business intend to drive the business into the next century. Laurie said: "The farm business has changed over the last five years with the family’s investment in the farm from the previous generation and the continuing investment in modern machinery with very high levels of technology is a must if we are to survive and sustain the business."
Recently Laurie attended a trailer towing course provided by Hadlow College which was supported by LandSkills South East and he said: "Without the funding from Lantra we wouldn't have done the training because of the huge cost associated with this course and test.”
