in 2009 Scotland’s elite land-based learners were recognised by the Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment, Richard Lochhead at our seventh Land-based Learner of the Year Awards.

The Winners

Richard Lochhead commented on the awards “The Lantra awards recognise outstanding achievement in the field of farming and other land-based industries and are vitally important in encouraging new Scottish talent to flourish.”

Outstanding Achievement

Overall Winner Land-based Learner of the Year Award

Darren Broadley of Avonbridge scooped the top prize, receiving £400 cash and the Peter Alexander Perpetual Trophy.  Darren completed a Modern Apprenticeship in Mixed Farming at Oatridge College.

Darren’s love of farming was inspired by memories of running around his grandparents small holding when he was very young.  Employer, J Pollock and Sons, and Oatridge College have been impressed with his hard work and industry knowledge.

  • Higher Educational Learner of the Year Runner-up: Rebecca Bainbridge from Stirling
  • Land-based Curriculum for Schools Learner of the Year: Dean Marshall from Summerhill, Dumfries
  • Land-based Curriculum for Schools Learner of the Year Runner-up: Ryan Gillan from Hawick
  • Trees and Timber Learner of the Year: Kate Sheppard from Ford, Lochgilphead
