Support during training

Your employer or training provider will make sure you have a mentor. Their job is to make sure your training fits your needs, offers the right skills for your job and satisfies national standards. They will also be there to help you through any difficult times.

Your future

Modern Apprenticeships can be demanding but they are very rewarding. Because Modern Apprenticeships train you in the skills employers want, they give you choices in your career. Your career doesn’t have to stop at the Advanced Apprenticeship; you can carry on working, maybe get promoted or go on to higher education. If you want to go on to university, you will find many institutes value your skills and knowledge and will offer you a place on various higher level qualifications.

A choice of industries and employers

Apprenticeships have been developed by a wide range of industries and are available with different types of employers from large companies to smaller local companies.

There are now many Modern Apprenticeship places being offered so choosing the right one can seem overwhelming. The right one for you will depend on your interests, your experience and the opportunities in your area. All Modern Apprenticeships include the following areas:

  • A competence-based element (the Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) qualification)
  • Core Skills - these are transferable skills such as working in teams, problem-solving, communication, numeracy and using new technology
  • Additional qualifications appropriate to the industry - such as chainsaw or crop spraying.
