The National Occupational Standards (NOS) are a great tool to help employers identify the skills their employees need, highlight best practice, develop training plans and develop job descriptions. These NOS also form the basis of Amenity and Production Horticulture qualifications.

The review

Since September 2011 Lantra held a number of NOS working groups covering Sports Turf, Botanic and Heritage Gardens, Green Space, Green Roofs and Production Horticulture. At the specific working groups we reviewed and drafted NOS to reflect jobs in the industry. The drafts were put through a peer review process and were consulted on during February 2012.

As many of the draft NOS within the Amenity Horticulture and Production Horticulture Suites were new or revised such as structures and surfaces, growing plants, establishing the planted area, it was critical that the NOS got the scrutiny they required to ensure they reflected the tasks people do in their jobs and were written in plain English.

Since the peer review, wider industry consultation and industry sign off, Lantra has submitted the final NOS for UKCES approval.

We'd like to thank everyone who helped with the review by drafting NOS, by spreading the word, reviewing NOS and providing feedback.  The response from industry to the review demonstrates the regard the industry has for the NOS and it's links with qualifications,, careers, continual professional development.

Next step

The next stage in the process will be to update the job profiles, which link to Skills Manager, Careers, Qualifications and Apprenticeships. Lantra will also work with Awarding Bodies to ensure the SVQ's, work-based Diploma's and any other qualifications which link to the NOS, are updated accordingly.
