National Occupational Standards (NOS for short) accurately describe what you need to do, know and understand in your job. As industry changes, we need to review our NOS to take into account new ways of working. So throughout 2011 and 2012, we reviewed the NOS within the Environmental Conservation Suite.

The National Occupational Standards (NOS) are a great tool to help employers identify the skills their employees need, highlight best practice, develop training plans and develop job descriptions. These NOS also form the basis of Environmental Conservation qualifications.

The review

Since September 2011 Lantra held a number of NOS working groups covering marine, volunteers and surveying. At the specific working groups we reviewed and drafted NOS to reflect jobs in the industry. The drafts were put through a peer review process and were consulted on from the end of January to the middle of February 2012.

As many of the draft NOS were new or revised such as structures and surfaces, surveying, species identification and education and interpretation, it was critical that the NOS received the scrutiny they required to ensure they reflected the tasks people do in their jobs and were written in plain English.

Since the peer review, wider industry consultation and industry sign off, the final NOS were submitted for UKCES approval.  We gained full approval at the end of March 2012

Thank you

We'd like to thank everyone who helped with the review by drafting NOS, by spreading the word, reviewing NOS and providing feedback. The response from industry demonstrates the regard the industry has for the NOS and it's links with qualifications, apprenticeships, careers, continual professional development.

Next step

The next stage of the process will be to update the job profiles, which link to Skills Manager, Careers, Qualifications and Apprenticeships. Lantra will also work with Awarding Bodies to ensure the SVQ's, work-based Diploma's and any other qualifications which link to the NOS, are updated accordingly.
