Dry stone walls are an important part of the landscape, and are an attractive way to provide boundary definition. Called ‘dry stone’ walls as no mortar is used to bind them and yet they remain stable due to the unique way in which they are constructed. This qualification has been developed with the support of the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain.

Our Level 2 Certificate in Dry Stone Walling is suitable for you if you are;

  • Already practicing aspects of dry stone walling and would like to gain a formal qualification
  • Interested in retraining for a new career, either to find employment or become employed

  • Wish to pursue dry stone walling as a leisure activity for personal use within your own property.

Our Qualification also aims to fill training gaps in this area of expertise, and will improve your awareness of Health and Safety legislation and how you can contribute to the HSE agenda, therefore enhancing your abilities in order to work safely, effectively and efficiently in your workplace.

Description: 

Our Level 2 Certificate in Dry Stone Walling aims to further develop your skills and knowledge, and includes the building of a cheekend. Once you have achieved the Level Two Certificate you will be able to progress further with dry stone walling opportunities and other related areas, and also on to the Level 3 Certificate in Dry Stone Walling. This Dry Stone Walling Level 2 Certificate is a regulated Qualification and provides you with the opportunity once completed to achieve a recognised national Qualification that reflects the national standards for the types of roles you can perform.

The qualification enables learners to demonstrate specialist knowledge and skills in specific job roles, such as Dry Stone Waller, Estate Worker and Landscape Gardener.

Whilst the qualification is included in the specific Dry Stone Walling pathway in the Intermediate Apprenticeship in Environmental Conservation, it is also available as a standalone qualification to support entry into the above occupations.

Product objectives: 

The Dry Stone Walling Qualifications are intended to offer learners the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to practice aspects of dry stone walling at a number of progressive levels; and at each level have the opportunity to achieve a recognised national Qualification that reflects the national standards for the type(s) of role(s) they can perform. The Qualifications will improve awareness of Health and Safety legislation and how individuals can contribute to the HSE agenda. Level Two aims to further develop skills and knowledge including the building of a cheekend. Achievement of Level Two prepares learners to progress to Level Three skills. This Level 2 Certificate aims to further develop skills and knowledge including the building of a cheekend.

Achievement of Level Two prepares learners to progress to Level Three skills. It consists of four Mandatory units:

  • Prepare to Build a Dry Stone Wall
  • Build and Pack Dry Stone Walls
  • Using Copestones
  • Building a Cheekend to a Dry Stone Wall

Following Ofqual’s regulatory requirements this qualification is approved for the following purpose:

  • B. Prepare for further learning or training and/or develop knowledge and/or skills in a subject area.

Sub Purpose:

  • B2. Develop knowledge and/or skills in a subject area.

The Level 2 Certificate in Dry Stone Walling is awarded on achievement of 19 credits with 137 guided learning hours. The recommended learning time for the achievement of a single credit is 10 hours. However, it may take slightly less or slightly more time to achieve the number of credits required. The size of the qualification is based upon national learning time and represents an average rather than a defined number of learning hours. It is important that the training provider approved to deliver the qualification gives the learner the appropriate time and support to enable them to achieve the qualification. A learner may claim certificate for any credit/unit(s) achieved, irrespective of whether the full qualification has been completed.
