Driving forward standards for equine hoof trimming

A new working group, consisting of practising barefoot trimmers, registered farriers and equine health professionals, has been driving forward the development of occupational standards for equine hoof trimming.

The working group, which has already met 5 times, was set up following a well attended meeting at Lantra on 2 March where it was agreed that standards for the occupation were needed.

So far, the group has:

  • Defined all of the skills required to trim equine hooves, which was consulted on and refined
  • Identified existing standards that adequately described these skills, particularly the more generic aspects such as running a business, customer care, personal skills and health and safety
  • Worked closely with the farriery working group on revisions to relevant parts of the Farriery standards (farriery standards are now open for consultation, click here for more information).

Going forward, the group will

  • Work on the development of additional standards for recognising the effect of the equine’s environment on foot health, understanding equine behaviour and post trimming activities.

These new standards will be open for consultation shortly; alternatively you can request a copy from Lantra.
