Accreditation is open to any individual adviser who meets the entry criteria. This encompasses technical, business management and consultancy skills. Inherent to accreditation is the recognition of skills outwith pure agriculture.
Farm business adviser profile
A profile of a farm business adviser has been developed based on core competencies mapped to industry standards, educational qualifications and relevant business management and technical knowledge/expertise. This is summarised below.
Qualifications
- Educated to a minimum of HND level or equivalent
Experience
- Proven track record of delivering business management advice, with the equivalent of at least 2 years full-time delivery of business management consultancy
- Proven ability to establish, appraise and understand the relative strengths and weaknesses of a business
- Demonstrable experience of developing potential strategies and plans to enhance business performance
- Current knowledge/experience of the agricultural industry including the key regulatory, environmental and subsidy regimes in Scotland.

- Is credible and influencing;
- Possesses good critical reasoning;
- Excellent communication and planning skills;
- Good at managing and maintaining professional relationships;
- Possesses drive and enthusiasm.
Other requirements
- IT literate with access to computer, email and telephone;
- Be mobile;
- Can demonstrate current Professional Indemnity Insurance.

How much does accreditation cost?
There is an annual accreditation fee of £200 + VAT.
A non refundable administrative fee of £50 + VAT is required upon application.
What is the accreditation process?
You will be required to complete a detailed application form and provide evidence of educational qualifications and relevant business management and technical knowledge/expertise. 3 copies of recently (within the previous 18 months) completed business plans (made anonymous). These should contain at least 2 farm business plans.
How does the accreditation process work?
Upon receipt of your application form the assessment of your application takes 4 steps:
1. Assessment of application form
2. Assessment of 3 recently completed business plans. (Within 18 months)
3. Verification of references, technical certificates etc.
