A vocational curriculum has been developed for schools in Scotland, to give children a valuable insight into land-based careers and provide them with on-the-job skills training. The land-based curriculum or 'rural skills for schools', is led by farmers, growers, land managers and employers from our sector.
Pupils acheive a nationall recognised qualification and are empowered with employability skills gained in a real working environment. Pupils can study for a Skills for Work (SfW) qualification in Rural Skills at intermediate level one or a Scottish Progression Award (SPA) in Rural Skills at intermediate two.
Following a two-year pilot of the programme at Breadalbane Academy, the land-based vocational curriculum has become a regular part of the school’s curriculum and has been successfully rolled out to other schools across Scotland.
Maxine Garson is employed as Schools Liaison Officer for Rural Skills in the Highlands and Cairngorm National Park area, responsible for rolling out the land-based curriculum in the area. Maxine has enjoyed unprecedented success and an overwhelming response from local employers.
