The trees and timber industry includes the care and management of trees, woodlands and forests, and the production of wood and timber products.
It comprises many different types of businesses including arboriculture, forestry establishment, forestry harvesting and timber processing.
However, many businesses are involved in more than one area. For example, an arboricultural business may also be involved in forestry establishment.
On the horizon
In recent years, there have been national, European and international policy developments, focusing particularly on sustainable management, and climate change.
The trees and timber industry is well placed to contribute to such issues. The industry recognises the key role it plays in:

Enhancement of natural and cultural heritage

Provision of local employment
Provision of opportunities for recreation

The industry is facing a skills shortage. Businesses have trouble recruiting due to a lack of applicants with the required skills or qualifications. There is a critical shortage in the following areas:
Young recruits to all occupations
Managers with practical/technical experience
Craft workers including tree climbers, planting teams, chainsaw and machine operators.

Better careers advice in schools
Improved promotion of the industry to the public
Funding for those wishing to enter the industry at a more mature age (24+)
Need for apprenticeships and higher education courses to be more practical so that new graduates are fit for work.
