Lantra is driving forward the new skills and business development agenda for the UK environmental and land-based sector.

Lantra represents the skills and business development interests of 17 related industries clustered around:

- Land management and production
- Animal health and welfare
- Conservation and management of the natural environment

In Wales, Lantra represents the interests of over 15,600 businesses with a total workforce  in excess of 70,000 employees and 11,000 volunteers, representing 7% of the UK's total land-based workforce.

Lantra helping protect sheep, farmers and the environment

The control of scab and lice is one of the biggest challenges facing sheep farmers in Wales today.  Either can have a significant effect on sheep productivity, wool and pelt quality and can adversely affect the welfare of infested sheep, providing a strong justification for preventative treatment.

Helping welsh farmers control scab and lice in their sheep safely while reducing the risk of polluting local rivers, is important to the Environment Agency Wales. Following their commissioning of Lantra to conduct five highly successful on-farm workshops last year to help promote best practice, more have been lined up.

This year's events sponsored by the Environment Agency Wales, this time working in partnership with FWAG Cymru, are:

  • 13 May, 1pm, Richard and Helen Roderick, Newton Farm, Scethrog, Brecon, Powys LD3 7YG

  • 2 June, 10am, Davies and Millichap, Rhiwgarn Farm, Rhiwgarn, Tonyrefail, Rhondda Cynon Taff CF39 8AX

  • 5 June, 1pm, J E Hughes & Son, Dolswydd Farm, Penybont, Llandrindod Wells LD1 5UB.

The guest speakers will cover:

  • Sheep ectoparasite control “understanding the enemy” – Dr Peter Bates VMEC
  • Sheep ectoparasite survey results – Hybi Cig Cymru
  • Manual and pesticide handling best practice demonstrations – Health and Safety Executive
  • Safe use of ATV demonstration – Health and Safety Executive
  • Using pour-ons; a practical demonstration – Ieuan Davies, Novartis
  • Sheep dipping; a guide to good practice – John Hughes, NPTC Assessor
  • Pollution prevention is better than enforcement – Nichola Salter, Environment Agency

Exhibitors will include: Pfizer, Animax, NFU, FUW, Farming Connect, Farm Liaison Service, local suppliers.

Iolo Jones, who kindly hosted one of last year's events on his farm in Llanfyllin, Powys commented: “There should be more events like this. People need to be more enlightened about such issues.  As farmers we need to improve our public image and it helps to be aware of our legal and moral responsibilities towards the environment. ”

Professional Practice for Sustainable Development

PP4SD provides training in Sustainable Development for businesses.  This can help with business planning, marketing and efficiency.

The Professional Practice for Sustainable Development (PP4SD) training approach will increase your understanding of sustainability issues in these worrying times within a business setting.  Based on a proven training course, it will enable owners, managers and staff of small and medium-sized companies to identify some of the main challenges they are facing, such as increases in energy costs, shortages of raw materials etc. and give them some business planning tools and ideas to help deal with these in a sustainable way.

Customers are increasingly demanding more environmentally-friendly goods and services, you may discover new marketing opportunities and expand your market.

For a limited time, funding is available to allow the university to deliver training events at no cost to yourselves, in most circumstances, and at your own premises if you prefer.  The training materials are copyright free, and available in English and Welsh languages for your future use.  The materials include case studies of a variety of businesses operating in Wales, and can be adapted to suit any type of business.

The WISE network can also offer free technical support and advice in many instances, for example, soil and water analyses.
