Lantra in Wales working with Environment Agency Wales

The control of scab and lice is one of the biggest challenges facing sheep farmers in Wales today.  Helping Welsh farmers control scab and lice in their sheep safely, while reducing the risk of polluting local rivers, is the topic of five free on farm workshops sponsored by Environment Agency Wales and organised by Lantra. The on farm events have also been supported by

  • Hybu Cig Cymru (Meat Promotion Wales)

  • Novartis

  • Pfizer

  • Animax

  • the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)

Scab and lice can have a significant effect on sheep productivity, wool and pelt quality and can adversely affect the welfare of infested sheep, providing a strong justification for preventative treatment.

Environment Agency Wales commissioned Lantra to conduct a series of five on farm workshops to help promote best practice.

Phil Morgan, leading on the workshops is taking into account the environmental impact as well as the potential benefits to business profit “It’s our job to protect the environment, the best way to do that is to prevent it from happening. This is why we are working with the sheep farmers to find the best way of protecting their sheep against parasites”.

Iolo Jones who kindly hosted one of the events on his farm in Llanfyllin, Powys was enthusiastic about the benefits the day brought to farmers and the environment, “there should be more events like this. People need to be more enlightened about issues such as this.” Iolo also highlighted the impact of such knowledge on the sector, rather than just the individual “as farmers we need to improve our Public Relations and make use of Lantra. I hope the other farmers have enjoyed it. It all helps for us to be aware of our legal and moral responsibilities towards the environment. ”

The day included presentations from Environment Agency Wales, Hybi Cig Cymru and Dr Peter Bates (VMEC) a leading expert on sheep ectoparasite control and was followed by demonstrations from an NPTC sheep dip assessor, guidance on pour-on use from Novartis, and best practice advice on pesticide best handling and use and manual handling by HSE approved instructors.

Professional Practice for Sustainable Development

PP4SD provides training in Sustainable Development for businesses.  This can help with business planning, marketing and efficiency.

The Professional Practice for Sustainable Development (PP4SD) training approach will increase your understanding of sustainability issues in these worrying times within a business setting.  Based on a proven training course, it will enable owners, managers and staff of small and medium-sized companies to identify some of the main challenges they are facing, such as increases in energy costs, shortages of raw materials etc. and give them some business planning tools and ideas to help deal with these in a sustainable way.

Customers are increasingly demanding more environmentally-friendly goods and services, you may discover new marketing opportunities and expand your market.

For a limited time, funding is available to allow us to deliver the training events at no cost to yourselves, in most circumstances, and at your own premises if you prefer.  The training materials are copyright free, and available in English and Welsh languages for your future use.  The materials include case studies of a variety of businesses operating in Wales, and can be adapted to suit any type of business.  The WISE network can also offer free technical support and advice in many instances, for example, soil and water analyses.
