Farming Connect

Lantra was delighted to recently win the bid to deliver Farming Connect's Skills Development Programme, which aims to benefit over 4,500 people working in farm or forestry businesses during the next three years.

Through the programme:

  • Lantra’s three regionally-based Skills Co-ordinators (in Caernarfon, Llandrindod Wells and Carmarthen) will undertake skills assessments to identify the knowledge and skills gaps of people and businesses

  • Lantra is working with eligible agricultural and forestry families throughout Wales to help them access funded training suited to their needs – whether it will bring practical benefits or enable them to satisfy regulatory obligations

  • Most businesses registered to undertake training with Farming Connect will be able to claim 50% funding.

The training will be delivered by colleges and training providers who have been approved to deliver funded training courses through Farming Connect.

To register with the Farming Connect Service, please phone 08456 000 813.

The programme is part of a £30m project funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and European Commission through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-13.

In a release publicising Lantra’s successful bid to deliver the Skills Development Programme, Gary Douch, Head of Farming Connect, said, “Lantra has the expertise and experience to ensure that farm and forestry businesses can equip themselves with the knowledge and skills they need to be competitive, which will really be of value to the wider rural economy of Wales.”

Commenting on the announcement, Kevin Thomas, Lantra National Director for Wales, said, “This is great news for the sector as training is more important than ever in the current economic climate.  Lantra was a key partner in delivering Farming Connect when it was first launched in 2001, arranging thousands of training placements and assessments and we look forward to delivering a high quality service once more.”

Lantra's Chief Executive Peter Martin added, “I warmly welcome this news as the Farming Connect programme offers a great opportunity for businesses of all sizes to benefit from the achievement of world-class skills. During a recession, training can prove particularly helpful in increasing efficiency and supporting business development.”
