Hadlow College boasts an extensive and thriving Champion dairy herd of 120 pedigree Holstein cows, with a 10,000lt herd average on a TMR system, located in the heart of beautiful Kent.
We currently have an exciting and challenging opportunity for someone with substantial experience to join the team as Dairy Herd Manager for the business. Duties will involve carrying out all tasks associated with the highly efficient management of the Blackman’s Lane Dairy Unit, including milking, breeding, Herd Husbandry and accurate record keeping. The postholder will also be required to supervise students when on their morning milking duties, as well as to maintain appropriate standards of environmental and safety management, providing support for the tuition of further and higher education students at Hadlow College.
This is a residential role and accommodation is provided in the form of a spacious on site 3 bedroom bungalow with a large garden, within a 10 minute walk of Hadlow village and with good public transport links to Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone.
The successful candidate will need to have experience of operating within a dairy herd, in addition to possessing the following skills:
- Ability to maintain robust record keeping and be able to use initiative within the working environment.
- Firm understanding of Health and Safety regulations.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Good team player/ problem solver.
Possession of a certificate in rough terrain forklift driving is essential and MO1 tractor driving would be desirable. In addition, a willingness to work flexible hours is required, as is the ability to work every other weekend plus bank holidays.
This is very much a role for an individual with initiative, innovation and enthusiasm, running a unit that reflects the commercial and operational conditions that students would encounter in the dairy industry and it also offers the chance to develop and strengthen the Hadlow herd as well as personal management skills.
