Senior Marine Operative - Stuart Simon

“I’ve always been keen on going out on the water, so I was delighted to find that a career in aquaculture allowed me to combine my interests and experience, while living in my local area” enthuses Senior Marine Operative Stuart Simon.

Undertaking a Modern Apprenticeship has proved enormously beneficial to Stuart: “It’s been a great grounding in practical knowledge to carry out my role and really boosted my confidence to apply for more senior positions.”

Stuart works as a supervisor at one of the Scottish Salmon Company’s largest sea sites. As a Senior Marine Operative, he is responsible for the day-to-day running of a salmon farming marine site, using a wide variety of fish husbandry, welfare, management and organisational skills.

“The results we get depend on the work we put in, and nothing compares to the rewarding feeling at the end of the day that you’ve really achieved something” he explains. “There are lots of opportunities in the industry to expand your knowledge and it’s great working for a company that allows me to thrive and progress.”

Stuart is certainly keen to recommend undertaking a Modern Apprenticeship to anyone considering getting into the industry. For Stuart, working in aquaculture is not a chore but something he relishes. Put simply: “You get out as much as you put in and you can wake up every morning looking forward to going to work” he concludes.
