Developing your skills

We spend a large part of our lives at work, so making the most of this time to develop our skills and abilities is important, enjoyable and worthwhile.

Improving your skills will:

  • Help you to do your job better

  • Keep your skills up to date

  • Help you to progress in your career.

Employers in the animal technology industry have identified the following areas which will help their businesses and help you to progress:

  • Improved technical skills relating to animal welfare (such as nutrition, surgical procedures, health and safety)
These skills fit with the industry’s need to minimise pain and distress to animals and the need to reduce the dependency on animal experimentation

  • Higher level, specialised skills and knowledge, such as transgenics
New molecular biology techniques will lead to an increase in the use of genetically modified animals. Genome research and research centre parks are expanding, so these skills can address an industry-wide shortage of animal technologists

  • Customer service skills working with scientific staff to ensure accuracy of procedures
These skills are valuable in the industry as they can help to improve the public perception of animal technology.

Whatever your age, experience or ambitions, there are qualifications and routes into learning to suit you.
