“I saw an advertisement for horticultural courses at Duchy College, so although I was living in Portsmouth at the time I drove all the way there to go and talk to them – I think the tutor was impressed that I had driven that far just to talk about the course! I ended up on the Eden Diploma.
“I needed to undertake training in some areas, such as the horticultural knowledge and skills to perform the job effectively. I needed training in the use of some of the tools and driving equipment – everyone assumes you have had training to drive any vehicle, but that isn’t always the case. I acquired these skills largely while I was on the Duchy course doing the Eden Diploma. I also took on part time jobs to be able to support myself – basic landscaping and that kind of thing. That gave me knowledge of the basics, like turfing and planting. From that, I was able to do a few odd jobs for people and some seasonal work. I also worked at a nursery for a while. It all helps you to gain knowledge of the industry as a whole.
"There are no limitations in this work and as long as you want to make a go of it, the world is your oyster!”
“I am enjoying the Wisley Diploma as I think it is giving me a chance to acquire a range of skills over a short time. The Duchy College Eden Diploma was also very helpful to me as this was my first real introduction to horticulture. Everyone on both courses has been really helpful and supportive – they understand that you are still learning.
“I find the job extremely satisfying; I love being outdoors and the creative element of the work. It’s nice being able to talk to the visitors and public as well – I’ve put my name down to do talks in the garden in the summer months as I really enjoy things like that. I’m from a teaching route anyway, so after I have had more experience I will be looking into teaching horticulture. I would encourage people to look carefully into what is actually involved in some of the courses they may be considering. For example, garden design is a popular course but not necessarily totally related to horticulture.
“I have loved working in horticulture so far and feel very lucky to have had the opportunities I have. Being at Wisley is great. I am surprised to have come this far, but am glad I have, and am determined to make the most of it. There are no limitations in this work and as long as you want to make a go of it, the world is your oyster!”
