Developing your skills

We spend a large part of our lives at work, so making the most of this time to develop our skills and abilities is important, enjoyable and worthwhile.

Employers in the production horticulture industry have identified many areas which will help their businesses and help you to progress, including:

  • Understanding the effects of weather, light, on production, water, energy and new technology can affect the crop

  • Business planning, marketing, IT skills, negotiation, communication, succession planning and skills transfer, benchmarking, logistics, people management and supervisory skills

  • Knowledge of health and safety, risk assessment and management, and hygiene

  • Practical skills – basic techniques, planting, re-planting, pruning, thinning, harvesting

  • Use of equipment and machinery – sprayers, lift trucks and tractors

  • Pest and disease, recognition, pest control, raising awareness and keeping up to date with changes.
