Scholarships offered for prestigious retail management training course

Retail managers will have the chance to attend a prestigious training course free of charge thanks to scholarships announced by Skillsmart Retail and Retail Trust this week.

Seven free places worth £1950 each are on offer for the Oxford Retail Masters Forum - a renowned four-day residential course which allows managers to network and learn from some of the most respected experts in retail.

The event will take place from 3-6 March 2008 at the Said Business School, University of Oxford, and the scholarships will give a chance to store managers, retail owners or individuals who feel they have hit a 'glass ceiling' at work because they lack qualifications.

Nigel J L Rothband, Chief Executive of Retail Trust, said: "Retail Trust has long recognised the need for increased educational opportunities for people working in retail. The aim of this bursary scheme is to assist aspiring managers in achieving their potential and fulfilling their ambitions in retail."

The course is run by the British Shops and Stores Association (bssa) and gives attendees the rare opportunity to learn from some of the leading lights in the industry whilst participating in exercises designed to maximise potential and showcase ability.

Delegates look at the overall challenges facing the retail world of both today and tomorrow with the assistance of recognised experts in specific fields such as global sourcing, ethical trading, demography, business management and climate change.

Each day features different guest speakers, working groups and assignments that range from examining key components that impact on retail business to pitching innovative business plans to a 'Dragons' panel of industry experts.

Attendees in the past have praised the course for providing networking opportunities, giving practical ideas for enhancing their own businesses, and providing a deeper insight into both current and future challenges.

It offers a chance for them to stretch themselves in a challenging but supportive environment, to share practical ideas and to stimulate new approaches to current and future business challenges.

Scholarships are available to anyone who has worked in the industry for at least seven years but are particularly relevant for senior managers, regional managers and store managers.
