Developing your skills

We spend a large part of our lives at work, so making the most of this time to develop our skills and abilities is important, enjoyable and worthwhile.

Improving your skills will:

  • Help you to do your job better

  • Keep your skills up to date

  • Help you to progress in your career.

Employers in the veterinary industry have identified many areas which will help their businesses and help you to progress, including:

  • The care and treatment of animal patients
Including assisting in operations, theatre prep, post-operative monitoring, the monitoring and maintaining of equipment and drugs

  • Customer service skills
Including managing customer expectations and needs in advising owners on care, nutrition, vaccinations etc

  • Improved animal welfare skills
These are needed in response to new legislation and the associated duty of care

  • Increased knowledge of animal behaviour
This is important in light of increasing customer demands, especially nutrition and alternative therapies

  • Mentoring and supervisory skills
Including team building, delegation, networking and supporting trainees.

Whatever your age, experience or ambitions, there are qualifications and routes into learning to suit you.
