We’re going back to basics to fully understand the range of jobs within your industry and the knowledge and skills associated with them. Not just the technical skills but looking at the whole job including health and safety, customer care, administration, management and much more. The job profiles will consolidate our knowledge of all 17 environmental and land-based industries and help to ensure we can portray the breadth of skills, jobs and careers opportunities in the sector. They will also help improve careers information and inform the ongoing development of training and qualifications – so it is important we get them right.
We have already done a lot of the work and drawn up a list of draft job titles and associated knowledge and skills based on information industry has given us. Now we are looking for individuals like you to let us know if we’ve got them right or not – and if not what needs to be corrected. Yes, we have worked with a team of designers to make the system as simple and easy to use as possible. It is based on a simple tick box approach and there are boxes you can click on and type in your comments. Below is a guide to the four simple steps to follow to review and comment on the job profiles.

First you will need to register with Job Consulter. This is a very simple process. Please enter your name, the name of your business and your email address. You need to register so that if you stop mid way through a profile and return to complete at a later date, all you need to do is enter your email address and you will go straight to where you left off. Your data will only be held for the purposes of this consultation.
Step 1: Find and click on the industry in which you work - this will reveal a ‘drop down’ list of core job roles.
Please select and click on the job role which most closely matches your job or the job you wish to consult on.
Step 2: This page lists a whole range of knowledge and skills which have been grouped together to make them easier to review.
Click on the ‘yes’ or ‘no’ box to indicate if you do or do not do this activity.
If you click the ‘no’ box you will have to write something in the comments box before you can continue to the next skill.
Note: everything save automatically.
Once you have reviewed all the skills please click ‘next’ to go to the next step.
If you have missed any of the knowledge and skills, a window will appear with the remaining skills to comment on.
Step 3: This is a general comments page with a box for you to click on and add any additional comments including any additional skills you think have been missed.
Step 4: There is the opportunity to select and comment on another job or to log out.

Yes. There is a button marked ‘save and come back later’ if you are unable to review the list of skills in one go. Otherwise the system will save everything automatically as you progress through the job role. When you log back on using your email address you will return to the same place in the process when you logged off.

Job roles will vary from business to business. Likewise, someone with the same job title as you may undertake a completely different job. It may be a good idea to scan a number of different job roles and skills before you find the one that best fits your job.
We are aiming to record all the skills that are needed to do a job – not just the technical skills. There are lots of ‘comment’ boxes which you can click on to suggest either changes to the text or to add more skills.

The job profiles will enable us to improve careers information, advice and guidance to promote the breadth of skills, knowledge and careers opportunities in the sector and dispel many of the misconceptions which exist. They will help individuals to understand what is actually involved in working in the sector and opportunities for career progression. It will also be used to inform careers advisors so they better understand careers in the sector.

It will be useful to compare your job against others who work in the industry. It may give you ideas on where you can develop your skills to help your business grow and develop that all important competitive edge.

If you are looking to employ staff the job profiles will help you decide on the skills your new recruits need and create a job specification so you can hire the right people.

If you already employ staff and are a manager or HR professional you could use the job profiles during appraisals to help identify the skills your staff need to develop.

It could also be used for staff development to help you and your staff pinpoint where you have gaps in skills or knowledge and identify relevant training courses to get the skills you need.
