Behind the wheel: Ryan plants the seeds for a successful career in farming

01-Jul-16

Ryan Kelly from County Londonderry in Northern Ireland received a very special birthday present from his parents in June. On his birthday, Lantra Awards instructor Brian Megahey from Ballyutoag Training arrived at the family farm to put Ryan through a Lantra Awards accredited Tractor Driving course. This came about as Ryan’s parents wanted to ensure that he was properly trained in all aspects of operating the farm’s tractors safely. In fact, the farm’s insurers wanted proof that Ryan had been on a proper training course.

The course covered all areas of tractor driving, from legislation, pre-use checks, using the operator’s manual to ensure correct use of controls, basic driving, trailer work and three point linkage equipment. As Ryan is 16, front end loaders and PTO operations were also covered. After assessment and a short multiple choice question paper, Ryan was given his assessment sheet to show how he had done. Brian gave written feedback outlining on his performance and Ryan was delighted to learn he had passed the course. A Lantra Awards certificate is on its way to the Kelly farm.

Ballyutoag Training offers the complete suite of Lantra Awards training courses. They can run courses for groups and on a one-to-one basis, either at their premises or on your own farm. Call Brian on 07767 446 897 or e-mail ballyutoag@aol.com.
