Lantra welcomes HSE report into reduced accidents but warns there is no room for complacency

The number of fatal injuries in agriculture, forestry and fishing is now at its lowest in five years, according to a recent report published by the HSE. Twenty nine deaths were reported in 2015/16, compared with an average of 37 deaths over the five previous years.

The report provides summaries of the fatalities and also outlines how straightforward steps, such as safe stop procedures for tractors and machines, or planning and  selecting equipment to carry out work at height, can make a real difference to improving safety.

Behind the wheel: Ryan plants the seeds for a successful career in farming

On his birthday, Lantra Awards instructor Brian Megahey from Ballyutoag Training arrived at the family farm to put Ryan through a Lantra Awards accredited Tractor Driving course. This came about as Ryan’s parents wanted to ensure that he was properly trained in all aspects of operating the farm’s tractors safely. In fact, the farm’s insurers wanted proof that Ryan had been on a proper training course.
