Message from the Chief Executive

Recent headlines have highlighted just how central the environmental and land-based sector is to the world economy today.  No other sector skills council can claim that the three issues dominating the G8 meeting of world leaders in Japan recently – climate change, food security and fuel security – are so central to the interests of their businesses.

As a result of a two-day climate change and environmental management seminar in Windsor Castle, Lantra is working with the network of Sector Skills Councils to look at the environmental management standards across all sectors, together with business improvement techniques. The aim is to develop innovative business development tools based on best environmental management principles.  In this way Lantra is leading a cross-sectoral activity which should benefit all SSCs.

The summer edition of Connect yet again demonstrated just how much work Lantra is doing across the UK to support our 17 very diverse industries.  The most recent online edition was also printed to coincide with the “Skills for Our Nation” campaign, and a great number were distributed at a series of ‘experiential’ events held in England’s major cities and the Royal Shows in Scotland and Wales.

The campaign launched in the shadows of the Houses of Parliament was followed by visits to Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester. The three-fold purpose of the events being: To create publicity and greater awareness of the wide range of career opportunities in the sector; to lobby government for funding and schemes designed to meet the needs of our businesses; and to raise awareness of Lantra’s work.

Among the 30 MPs and Members of the House of Lords to visit Lantra’s London event was Minister for Skills David Lammy MP who delivered a speech supporting Lantra’s work. Industry representatives, colleges, training providers, trade associations and unions were also in attendance at the campaign events and we have been delighted by the positive feedback.

Early risers may have caught Gordon McGlone’s interview with Sarah Montague, just before the 7am Today programme on Radio 4 on the first morning of the campaign. This proved to be just the start of some exceedingly good coverage highlighting some of the issues facing our industries and promotional pieces; the result has been an increased volume of enquiries, with a good number considering what the environmental and land-base industries might have to offer them as a career choice.
