Crofters Competence Framework

The unique skills of crofters are continuing to be recognised and developed as Lantra moves training forward with a Crofters Competence Framework. The framework identifies the actual skills required for Crofters, recognising traditional skills but also taking into account change factors such as new technology, new legislation and market forces. It enables individual Crofters to measure their existing skills, recording practical experiences and achievements as well as qualifications.

Seventy Crofters are now being invited to pilot the new framework, using both paper-based workbooks and a cutting edge online system to track their progress. The online system,

Crofters

based on Lantra’ OCF technology, was demonstrated at a recent training session where members of the Crofting Training Panel, which included representatives from the Scottish Crofting Foundation, Scottish Natural Heritage and Forestry Commission Scotland, had the opportunity to explore and comment on the system.

John Bannister, Training Manager for Scottish Crofting Foundation, said "The programme seems to be developing into everything the Crofting Training Panel wished for and promises to be both a user friendly system and a very user management tool’.

The OCF is also being used to develop a training programme specifically for ghillies. A focus group, which includes owners, river managers, river board members, bailiffs and ghillies, is working with Lantra to develop the unique Ghillies Skills Passport which will contain the competences required in that role.
