National Occupational Standards for crofters and smallholders

Project start date: January 2009                                        Project end date: February 2010

Aim of the project:

The aim of this project is to develop National Occupational Standard for crofters and smallholders.

Work undertaken:

Work started in Scotland to look at the skills for crofters and various meetings were held throughout 2009. Additional meetings were held in England and Wales to agree on the skills needed for smallholders and to identify where standards already exist. The skills for crofters and smallholders were mapped during the meetings to highlight similarities.

As the activities of crofters and smallholders are so diverse it was agreed to group them into Core, Primary and Secondary activities. The Core activities are those that all crofters and smallholders will need. The Primary activities focus on the primary use of the croft or smallholding. The Secondary activities are those which make use of products from the croft or smallholding, or make use of the buildings and land for other purposes. Where the activities already exist in other NOS, it has been decided not to incude them in the suite but to refer to where they can be found.
