National Occupational Standards for equine barefoot care (paraprofessionals)

Aim of the project:

The aim of this project is to develop National Occupational Standard for equine barefoot care (paraprofessionals).

Meetings and updates:

An initial meeting to launch the project was held in March 2009. Due to possible issues, it was decided that an open meeting was needed, independently chaired and attended by all organisations with a vested interest in equine health. Approximately 50 people attended the event which was chaired by Chris House, President of the British Equine Veterinary Association. The outcome of the meeting was agreement that NOS should be developed for barefoot trimming and a working group was formed. Five meetings were held throughout 2009. A skills list was produced and agreed and three new NOS were written. The group has also worked closely with the Farriers on the revisions to relevant parts of the Farriery NOS which they will share. The new suite is to be called 'equine barefoot care' and contains three new NOS, five shared with farriery and 7 imported NOS from other SSCs/SSBs.
