Assessing the skills needs of your industry

Lantra is pleased to reveal its latest research report: A Skills Assessment for the Environmental and Land-based Sector.

The research sets out the skills gaps and shortages of the current workforce and identifies the projected skills needs through to 2017.

It is based upon a comprehensive review of changes and evidence that has emerged over the past year. The report provides the vital labour market intelligence to ensure that government, employers, individuals and other stakeholders are able to make appropriate investments in skills so that this vital sector can thrive and grow.

Using the research data a series of factsheets have been produced for each nation and for individual industries on a UK basis. To view the final report and the factsheets please click here.

From 2009 onwards this Skills Assessment research will be undertaken annually. The next research report to be published by Lantra will be an Assessment of Current Provision which will also from 2009 be produced annually. These combined reports will provide the evidence base for Lantra and other key stakeholders to plan and target their services.

Lantra, trade associations and industries’ employers will continue to lobby for change, raise awareness of issues, and set in motion initiatives aiming to further good practice, increase business performance, endeavour to change public mis-conceptions and promote the fulfilling career opportunities available in this sector.

Hilary Benn

Environment Secretary Hilary Benn welcomed Lantra's Skills Assessment research:

"People who work in agriculture and elsewhere on the land face many challenges as the result of climate change and the need to increase production while having less impact on the environment.

So we need to support them and one way we can do that is by ensuring they have the skills they need for sustainable, productive farming. I welcome Lantra's work in identifying the skills required to help our workers meet these challenges."
