Ensuring standards and qualifications meet industry needs

Lantra works with employers to develop many standards and qualifications so that truly meet employment needs.

Lantra’s vision for the future of qualifications and training is to develop a flexible and responsive framework of qualifications and training from national occupational standards to ensure industries within the sector have sufficient qualified and experienced staff whose skills and experience are recognised.

To meet the changing needs of industry, it is important that these standards and qualifications are regualrly updated to ensure they are fit for purpose. Your input into this process is vital.

National Occupational Standards

National Occupational Standards (NOS) identify the essential building blocks - the detailed knowledge, understanding, ability and experiences somebody needs to carry out their job effectively. Lantra reviews the NOS for each industry every three years. To find out more and what consultations are taking place now click here.

Job Profiles

Job profiles consist of core skills that each person has to do as part of their job i.e. working safely, dealing with personal performance, as well as technical skills specific to the job.  They also consist of variable/ desirable skills that a person may also do within their job. Lantra works with industry and their representatives to ensure they are sector approved. To find out more click here.

Apprenticeships

One of Lantra’s key tasks is to develop, maintain and review a number of UK Apprenticeship Frameworks so they meet the requirements of the apprentice, the employer and industry and that they are deliverable by providers. The reviews have been split into three different phases. Please click here for more information.

Qualifications and Credit Framework

Responding to employers’ demands for more manageable and flexible learning assessments, the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) will change the way the skills of individuals in England, Wales and Northern Ireland can be recognised and accredited. Designed to make the entire qualification system simpler to understand and use, qualifications are broken down into small individual pieces that can be fit together in a variety of ways to create complete qualifications. Scottish Qualification and Credit Framework

The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) was developed to meet the needs of Scotland's learners and was created by bringing together all Scottish mainstream qualifications into a single unified framework. It was developed in partnership by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), Universities Scotland, Quality Assurance Agency Scotland and the Scottish Executive, and was launched in December 2001.
