Fencing

Fences can be simple or incredibly high tech, purely functional or decorative, and can be made of wire, wood, concrete or metal. They have a variety of purposes such as:

  • Motorway barriers

  • Barriers to protect workers on roads or construction sites

  • Prison perimeter fencing

  • Zoos and animal sanctuary enclosures

  • Agriculture and forestry

  • Garden boundary fences

  • Public safety fencing

  • Protecting people and property from vandalism

  • Reducing sound levels.


There are approximately 4,000 fencing businesses in the UK, employing around 25,000 people The industry is made up of specialist fencing contractors and multi-skilled operators (e.g. in the landscape and environmental industries, and the construction, local government, volunteer and forestry sectors). The businesses range from large commercial companies to small self-employed contractors.
