Fisheries management

Fisheries management includes those involved in freshwater angling, conserving and enhancing freshwater fish and habitats, and securing sustainable freshwater fisheries.

The fisheries management industry currently includes government-funded fisheries research, privately funded research (Fishery Trusts), commercial trout fisheries, District Salmon Boards, fishing guides and ghillies (someone who acts as a guide for hunting and fishing) and angling clubs.

Angling is one of the nation's biggest participation sports and coarse, game and sea anglers generate an annual expenditure of £3.3 billion. 

The Environment Agency is the largest single employer of people in freshwater fisheries work in Britain. Other employers include the privatised water companies, the Department of the Environment (Defra) and individual private commercial fisheries. There are 22 Fishery Trusts employing approximately 33 full-time biologists.
