A career as a Warehouse Team Leader

Warehouse Team Leaders are responsible for supervising the daily activities of team members to make sure the workload stays on track and that orders are fulfilled. Working with the Warehouse Manager, you will also oversee the general warehouse area, making sure it is safe and productive during your shift.

Warehouse Team Leaders must have strong leadership skills and able to communicate clearly and effectively with their team members.

You’ll need:

  • strong and influential leadership skills

  • to be customer focused and have good customer service skills

  • effective written and verbal communication skills

  • to be able to liaise with transport and courier companies, team members, customer and other stakeholders

  • to lead by example and keep calm in a high-pressure environment

  • to have a good understanding of health and safety issues in the sector

  • a flexible and adaptable approach to work

  • physical skills such as mobility and co-ordination

You will need the relevant certificates to do things like using machinery.

Around 35-40 hours per week. This role often requires shift work with some evening, weekend, and bank holiday cover.

Day to Day
  • Line managing and developing a team through coaching, mentoring and training

  • Ensure that all documentation and information is handled and completed as required

  • Manage the Warehouse Team and allocate work

  • Oversee warehouse operations including inventory control, shipping and receiving, and maintaining records of transactions

  • Provide management reports

  • Clarifying tasks with colleagues to ensure they meet targets and objectives

  • Setting team targets and team goals

  • Ensure stock checks are done in line with schedules

  • Ensure that the workspace is safe, clean and tidy and that health and safety rules are followed at all times

Working Environment

You will spend most of your time working in the warehouse. However, your working environment may be at height, physically demanding and outdoors some of the time when overseeing receiving/dispatching goods. Overalls, gloves and safety boots, and use protective equipment (PPE) such as ear protectors and hard hats will be used when required.

Warehousing and logistics are part of a company’s supply chain – the things a company needs to do to get their goods or services to their customers efficiently. For the Republic of Ireland, Ibis World reported in 2022 that the warehousing and storage industry is valued at €865.7m and ranked 9th in Europe.

Jobs are incredibly varied – you could work in a warehouse (a commercial building that receives, stores and distributes products) or you could focus on logistics (managing the storage and delivery of products). Both warehousing and logistics work closely together to help retail, manufacturers and food and drink producers get their goods to their customers.

Thanks to the rise of online shopping, British industry needs more and more warehouses, storage and supply chain activities to keep goods moving. Some careers options focus on reducing the environmental impact of this activity, looking at how to use less energy and fuel to help organisations come up with more sustainable and efficient ways of transporting goods.

What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a unique blend of work experience and study to help build the skills and knowledge you need for your career. Apprentices are employees – they have a contract, are paid and get the same benefits as everyone else. But the difference between an apprenticeship and a normal job is that apprentices are regularly released from work for training. Sometimes that’s a day a week, sometimes it’s for a longer block – it all depends on the job and the apprenticeship.

Apprentices work for all kinds of people at all kinds of stages in their lives. Most apprentices fall into one of three categories:

  • someone who is just starting their career
  • someone who already has a job and wants to move forward in their company
  • someone who already has a job and wants to retrain to make a career change.

Previously restricted to school leavers and young people, apprenticeships are now a dynamic way of retraining people of all ages - there’s no upper age limit. The minimum age to become an apprentice is 16 and candidates can’t be in full-time education.
