A career as a Pig Technician

Pig Technicians have skills to carry out specialist services on a pig farm. This may include applying treatments and vaccinations, detecting and identifying when pigs are on heat, artificial insemination of sows and gilts (female pigs) or putting them to the boar, and pregnancy diagnosis through scanning.

This is an important role on the pig farm and goes a long way to ensuring long term profitability.

Skills/Knowledge

You’ll need:

  • to enjoy working with and caring for animals in a farm environment, pigs in particular

  • to work well with others and on your own when needed

  • good communication skills

  • physical skills such as mobility and co-ordination

  • patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations

  • to be flexible and open to change

  • to accurately calculate weights and measurements and keep accurate records

  • to use a computer or hand-held device for some tasks

You might need to take short courses to learn how to operate equipment. You’ll need the relevant certificates to do things like using vaccines.
