An Equine Dental Technician (EDT) is a qualified professional who examines and evaluates the horse’s teeth. They may also assist the Equine Dentist during the study, diagnosis, and treatment of various oral diseases, or dental disorders of horses.
The conformation of the horse’s jaw or undetected problems with their teeth could lead to many welfare and performance issues in the horse so appropriate dental care from a qualified Equine Dental Technician or Equine Vet is an important part of equine care.
You’ll need:
an interest and understanding of equine science, anatomy and physiology
experience of and confidence in handling horses, and an understanding of horse behaviour
to look at problems holistically and systematically
good communication skills to talk with owners and vets
good observational skills and attention to detail
physical skills such as mobility and co-ordination, and a good level of fitness and stamina
to understand the health and safety considerations of working around horses
patience and be able to stay calm under pressure
EDT roles include hard, physical work - it involves a lot of bending, lifting, and standing. A driving licence is necessary, as is a vehicle suitable for making stable visits.
It is highly recommended that vets only work with people who are suitably qualified and have passed the British Equine Veterinary Association and British Veterinary Dental Association (BEVA/BVDA) examination and then become a member of the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians. This will also mean that you have:
logged over 300 supervised dental cases
worked for a minimum of five days under the supervision of a qualified EDT or experienced vet
Around 35-40 hours per week and may vary to the needs of their clients - weekend or bank holiday work can be required.
Perform routine checks and rasping
Assist Veterinarian during the study, diagnosis, and treatment of various oral diseases or dental disorders of horses
Identify emerging dental problems and take measures to prevent these issues from developing further
Conduct laboratory tests
Take x-rays
Keeping the animals’ records up to date
Advise owners and trainers of animals on how to take better health care of their animals
Equine Dental Technicians work in varieties of settings such as veterinary hospitals, private clinics, equestrian facilities, research facilities, zoos, farms etc. However, much of the time you'll be working outdoors in all weathers.
