A career as a Gamebird Rearer

A Gamebird Rearer breeds and raises gamebirds, for example pheasant, quail, or partridge, and releases them into the countryside to supplement wild stocks.

Many shoots in the UK and Ireland rely on hand-reared gamebirds, released into the countryside during the summer to supplement the wild stocks before the winter shooting season begins. Good game farming ensures that these birds are strong, fit and ready for the natural environment in which they will live.

Production sizes vary from a small family team who have diversified from their main agricultural farming activities to larger gamebird-only farms rearing over a million birds annually. There are Game Rearing Codes of Practice in England, Scotland and Wales that ensure rearing is carried out to a high welfare standard.

You'll need:

  • knowledge and understanding of the specific nutritional and welfare needs of game birds

  • a commitment to high animal welfare standards and to follow the Code of Practice for game rearing in your nation

  • access to sufficient land for rearing activities

  • good hands-on practical skills for maintenance of fences, bird houses and other essential infrastructure

  • good team working skills

  • good customer service and business management skills

Typical Hours

Between 40 and 55 hours per week or more, including weekends. Managing and rearing game birds takes a lot of time and so long days are not unusual. For larger farms, you may work in shifts.

Day to Day
  • Check on the health and wellbeing of the birds

  • Ensure that birds have access to adequate and appropriate food, shelter, and water

  • Liaising with vets and other professionals to draw up or review flock health plans

  • Ensure that all necessary records are kept up to date

  • Managing and controlling pests

  • Maintaining and proofing bird houses

  • Managing staff and contractors

  • Meet with existing and potential customers, discussing their requirements and sales details

Working Environment

Gamebirds are raised in a mix of sheds and outdoor environments - you will work in both environments in all weathers.

What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a unique blend of work experience and study to help build the skills and knowledge you need for your career. Apprentices are employees – they have a contract, are paid and get the same benefits as everyone else. But the difference between an apprenticeship and a normal job is that apprentices are regularly released from work for training. Sometimes that’s a day a week, sometimes it’s for a longer block – it all depends on the job and the apprenticeship.

Apprentices work for all kinds of people at all kinds of stages in their lives. Most apprentices fall into one of three categories:

  • someone who is just starting their career
  • someone who already has a job and wants to move forward in their company
  • someone who already has a job and wants to retrain to make a career change.

Previously restricted to school leavers and young people, apprenticeships are now a dynamic way of retraining people of all ages - there’s no upper age limit. The minimum age to become an apprentice is 16 and candidates can’t be in full-time education.
