Agricultural Contractors provide temporary, seasonal, or specialised support to farms, performing a whole range of tasks. Over 90% of farming businesses use contractors to provide individual services (e.g., crop spraying, harvesting, sheep shearing) or take on whole farm contracts and manage all the farm work. A contractor’s activities will be largely weather dependent and can be seasonal.
Contractors are usually self-employed on short contracts, depending on when farmers or other employers need the extra support – work can have busy periods then quieter times. Employers will expect you to have previous experience of working on farms or with farm machinery. Contractors often have their own machinery and equipment and will have their own liability insurance. Agricultural contracting can be competitive, and it can help you to get jobs and build your business if you have a unique specialism that no one else offers in the surrounding area.
You’ll need:
previous knowledge and experience of farming
to work well with others and on your own once given direction
good communication skills
good attention to detail
physical skills such as mobility and co-ordination
patience and the ability to stay calm under pressure
to be flexible and open to change
to accurately calculate weights and measurements and keep accurate records
to use a computer or hand-held device for some tasks
You’ll need to have achieved qualifications and certificates of competence to do things like use chainsaws and apply pesticides. You may be expected to know how to operate equipment, tractors, or forklifts.
Around 44-46 hours a week, which may include evening/weekend work and irregular hours depending on the season and weather. For example, you’ll work longer hours when harvesting crops in summer.
On arable and production horticulture farms you could sow, plant, weed, spray, cultivate and harvest crops like cereals, vegetables, and fruit.
On farms that grow cereals and harvest grains, you may use tractors and combine harvesters with on-board computers, which help to harvest a field and monitor yield.
On livestock farms, you’ll look after animals like cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, and poultry, which involves preparing feed, hoof trimming, shearing sheep, dipping sheep, preparing animals for transport, checking for signs of illness, and keeping accurate records.
On all types of farms, you could carry out general tasks like maintaining buildings, servicing, and repairing vehicles and machinery, trimming hedges, excavation or drainage work, and mending fences and walls.
Many tasks are physically demanding, although the industry is becoming increasingly mechanised, meaning there is far less demand for just physical strength. Some tasks require protective clothing (PPE), which you may be expected to supply. Contractors will need to travel between farming jobs, so being able to drive and having access to a car could help when looking for opportunities.

But the difference between an apprenticeship and a normal job is that apprentices are regularly released from work for training.
