A career as a Parts & Stores Manager

Parts & Stores Managers are responsible for the department budget and stock. They are also responsible for department staff: apprentices, trainees, qualified parts and senior parts staff.

Managers work closely with repair workshops - parts are used for repair of new and second-hand machinery being sold and for supplying customers who need replacement parts for existing machines. The Parts department makes a large contribution to the business turnover and profit - Parts & Stores Managers work with directors or owners to discuss business plans, targets and stocking rates and levels.

Skills/Knowledge

You’ll need:

  • a good understanding and knowledge of land-based machinery, different engineering parts and their functions

  • good communication and customer service skills

  • to be methodical and keep accurate records

  • to keep to budgets, managing resources including stock and staff

  • physical skills such as mobility and co-ordination, and a good level of fitness

  • to be confident working on your own, and as part of a wider team

  • to use your initiative and be decisive

  • to use a computer, recording stock and order information

A driving licence is necessary, and you will be given access to a vehicle.

Typical Hours

Around 35-40 hours per week, which may include out-of-hours and weekend work.

Day to Day
  • Dealing with requests for parts and materials from technicians or customers on the phone or by email

  • Providing advice and quotations to customers, making sales of recommended items

  • Raising invoices and issuing receipts for stock that is sold

  • Liaise with manufacturers on any parts issues or faults

  • Noting which stock is running low and ordering replacements in good time

  • Attend monthly management meetings with dealership management team

  • Carry out staff appraisals and support staff with any training needs

Working Environment

You will mainly be based in a particular dealership, in the vehicle servicing department and warehouse. There will be a lot of bending, lifting and carrying heavy items.

Managers working within a multi-branch business may need to travel to make sure targets and stock control are being managed correctly and meeting agreed target levels.
