A career as a Parts & Stores Person

A Parts & Stores Person supports Sales and Service departments with the supply and servicing of machinery parts. They give advice to customers, order the required parts for the Servicing team and keep track of stock in the warehouse.

A Parts & Stores Person will have a good understanding of engineering parts and have some sales and customer service skills skills, but training can be provided. They manage stock control and purchasing products for needed for repairs or add-on accessories, working with workshop technicians, the sales team and customers. They may need to contact manufacturers to discuss any faults with parts and arrange replacements.

Skills/Knowledge

You’ll need:

  • a good understanding and knowledge of land-based machinery, different engineering parts and their functions

  • good communication and customer service skills

  • to be methodical and keep accurate records

  • physical skills such as mobility and co-ordination, and a good level of fitness

  • to be confident working on your own, and as part of a wider team

  • to use your initiative and be decisive

  • to use a computer, recording stock and order information

A driving licence is necessary, and you will be given access to a vehicle.

Typical Hours

Around 35-40 hours per week, which may include out-of-hours and weekend work. 

Day to Day
  • Receiving and unloading new stock deliveries

  • Recording the numbers, names and location of items on computer

  • Sorting and storing parts and materials, checking availability periodically

  • Dealing with requests for parts and materials from technicians or customers on the phone or by email

  • Providing advice and quotations to customers, making sales of recommended items

  • Putting orders together and making deliveries

  • Raising invoices and issuing receipts for stock that is sold

  • Liaise with manufacturers on any parts issues or faults

  • Noting which stock is running low and ordering replacements in good time

Working Environment

You will mainly be based in a particular dealership, in the vehicle servicing department and warehouse. There will be a lot of bending, lifting and carrying heavy items.
