Training at Lantra

Whether your team are just starting out, ready to move your career forward or simply want to refresh their skills, it can be tricky to find the right course. So we’ve put together this handy overview to help you understand what’s out there and help you pick the right course for you and your team.

Assessed training

What is it?

Assessed training means you must complete the full course then take an assessment to demonstrate the skills and knowledge you’ve gained.  The assessment might be a classroom-based test, or it could be a practical demonstration of the skills you’ve learned.

Then what?

Once you complete the course and pass the assessment, you’ll be awarded a nationally recognised certificate or skills card to prove your competence.

Non-assessed training

What is it?

In non-assessed training, you simply complete the course, learning new skills and knowledge as you go. You don’t need to sit or pass an assessment at the end.

Then what?

Once you complete the course you’ll get a certificate to show you’ve attended and the skills you’ve developed.

Refresher training

What is it?

Refresher training helps keep your skills and knowledge up to date. Sometimes you have to do this to stay up-to-date in a skill – for example, if you take a first aid course you might need to take a refresher course after five years. Some jobs expect you to regularly update your skills in certain areas, like chainsaw handling.

Then what?

When you complete the course, you get a certificate to show you’ve updated your skills.

Certified training

What is it?

Certified training courses are supported by a specific industry bodies or companies. For example, some of our forestry courses have been developed with the Forestry Commission in line with the Forestry Industry Safety Accord (FISA).

Because we develop our training in partnership with industry bodies, all our courses are certified.

Then what?

Certified training may be assessed or non-assessed. Either way, once you’ve completed the course or passed the assessment you’ll get a certificate or skills card to demonstrate your new knowledge.

E-learning

What is it?

E-learning courses are a flexible way of gaining new skills. They’re completed online, at a time and location that suits you, so you can easily fit your training around your job and other commitments. There’s no travel time either!

Then what?

Once you’ve successfully completed the course, you’ll receive a certificate straight away.

Qualifications

What is it?

Qualifications are usually made up of a number of modules, grouped together in levels from entry to eight. Complete all the modules in your course, pass any assessments, and get a nationally recognised qualification.

Then what?

Qualifications make it easier to progress in your career. Our qualifications are recognised by regulatory bodies like Ofqual, SQA Accreditation and Qualification Wales.

What is it?

With Lantra, you can complete a land-based qualification under the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). SCQF is Scotland’s national qualification framework and is highly respected by employers. There are twelve levels (12 is the most demanding) with credit points showing how long takes to complete a course.
