Dry stone walls are part of our heritage and an important and attractive way to define boundaries.

Laying the stones without using mortar is an age-old technique which keeps the walls strong and stable.

You will be advancing your knowledge, building walls to a high standard.

The finer details

Our Level 3 Certificate in Dry Stone Walling is a regulated and recognised qualification in the industry.

You will build on the knowledge and skills you have gained in Levels 1 and 2, with more emphasis on finish and quality, including building more complex special features such as retaining walls, high walls and curves.

Continue to work safely and preserve our wildlife and habitat.

In Level 3 there four mandatory units and then you need to complete at least one of three optional units to achieve your qualification.

The Mandatory Units are:

  • Prepare to Build a Dry Stone Wall
  • Building a Cheekend to a Dry Stone Wall
  • Building a Retaining Dry Stone Wall
  • Building a Curved Dry Stone Wall.

The Optional Units (one must be completed) are:

  • Building a Dry Stone Wall on Sloping Ground
  • Building a High Dry Stone Wall
  • Incorporating a Lunkie Hole into a Dry Stone Wall.

Theory and Practical

Who should attend?

This is a more advanced course so you will need strong skills in Dry Stone Walling or have completed Levels 1 and 2.

Worth noting: If you are under 16 years of age you will need consent from a parent or guardian to take this qualification.

What will be covered?

The Mandatory Units

Unit 1, Prepare to build a dry stone wall, you will:

  • Know how to strip down a dry stone wall
  • Prepare a dry stone wall for rebuilding
  • Know how to prepare the foundations for a dry stone wall
  • Lay the foundation of a dry stone wall.

Unit 2, Building a cheekend to a dry stone wall, you will:

  • Be able to prepare a batter frame
  • Know the type of stones that are required for a cheekend / wallhead
  • Be able to build the foundations for a cheekend / wallhead
  • Be able to build the cheekend / wallhead
  • Be able to apply all appropriate health and safety requirements.

Unit 3, Build a retaining dry stone wall, you will be able to :

  • Strip down a retaining dry stone wall
  • Lay foundations for a retaining dry stone wall
  • Build a retaining dry stone wall
  • Apply all appropriate health and safety requirements.

Unit 4, Building a curved dry stone wall, you will be able to:

  • Calculate the curve for a dry stone wall
  • Lay foundations for a curved dry stone wall
  • Build a curved dry stone wall
  • Place copestones for a curved dry stone wall
  • Apply all appropriate health and safety requirements.

The Optional Units

Unit 1, Building a dry stone wall on sloping ground, you will:

  • Select a slope for building a dry stone wall
  • Lay foundations for a dry stone wall built on sloping ground
  • Build a dry stone wall on sloping ground
  • Apply all appropriate health and safety requirements.

Unit 2, Building a high dry stone wall, you will be able to:

  • Lay the foundations for a high dry stone wall
  • Build a high dry stone wall
  • Finish a high dry stone wall
  • Apply all appropriate health and safety requirements.
