There are many situations where using a MEWP to carry out works in a tree is the obvious route to take, and the obvious route to take to proving that you are qualified to carry out this work is by completing the Lantra Award  Level 3 Award in Use of a Chainsaw from a Mobile Elevated Work Platform.

This is a nationally recognised qualification and upon completion, you will receive a certificate and a card.

For professional chainsaw operators working in forestry and arboriculture the industry recommendation is that for ’high risk‘ activities the minimum level of adequacy of training is to a certificate of competence or nationally recognised qualification where assessment is carried out independently of the training. This qualification meets this requirement’

Who should attend?

If you are over the age of 16 and wish to develop your knowledge, understanding, and skills and require proof of competence within your field of expertise then this Qualification is suitable for you.

Your role may require you to use your skills across a range of trees and timber operations.

The Qualification aims to ensure you can be confident the minimum standards of good working practices are observed/followed at all times.

The Qualification has been devised with the key aim for you to successfully evidence your competence in forestry and arboriculture operations.

Individual learning programmes can be tailored to your needs whilst enabling you to achieve or work towards achieving a national competence qualification and improve your opportunities.

This unit is not appropriate for persons under 16 years of age.

Learners must hold the appropriate and current licence to practice for the MEWP type being operated and chainsaw maintenance and cross-cut.

What will be covered?

If you do this qualification you will be assessed on the following:

  • Understanding of relevant health and safety and industry good practice.
  • Ability to promote health and safety and industry good practice
  • Understanding of how to set up and operate a MEWP
  • Ability to set up and operate a MEWP in accordance with industry good practice and the operator’s manual.
  • Understanding of how to deal with emergency situations affecting operators working from a MEWP.
  • Understanding of how to operate a chainsaw from a MEWP.
  • Ability to prepare a MEWP for transport.
