Our course will provide you with the knowledge, skills, and understanding to carry out aerial pruning of a tree.
It's designed for anyone over the age of 16 who already has experience of climbing trees using work positioning systems.
This course is ideal if you're looking to obtain either a Licence to Practice or a regulated qualification.
Once it's completed, you can proceed to the Lantra Awards Level 3 Award in Aerial Tree Pruning.
The finer details
We use a balanced mix of theory and practical sessions.
You'll learn all the key health and safety legislation and guidelines.
A number of hands-on sessions will follow.
You'll look at the different types of pruning available and the methods and techniques required to carry them out.
Worth noting: You'll need to be physically fit, and not on any medication that could affect your safety, to complete this course.
It's not for anyone suffering from vertigo or similar conditions.
If you aim to use a Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) for this course, you must hold a current licence to practice for the relevant machine.

Who should attend?
This course is intended for persons over the age of 16 already experienced in climbing trees using work positioning systems. Those wishing to attend this training course must be physically fit and not suffering from vertigo or similar conditions or on medication that could affect their safety. Anyone wishing to use a Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) for this course must hold a current licence to practice in the MEWP type intended for operation.
What will be covered?
By the end of this course, you'll be able to:
- Understand your personal duties and responsibilities
- State the possible hazards/risks when carrying out maintenance or operational tasks
- Produce a site-specific risk assessment for tree pruning operations
- State the principles of HSE legislation and safety guidelines relevant to tree pruning
- Select the appropriate PPE and state the maintenance requirements
- Select the appropriate equipment and state the maintenance requirements
- Understand the types of pruning and how, and when, each should be applied
- Demonstrate the principles of target pruning and how to apply them
- Prepare machinery and equipment for transport and storage
- Dispose of arisings appropriately.
