At the end of this qualification, your practical skills, knowledge and understanding will have been assessed on:

  • Location and avoidance of underground apparatus
  • Monitoring signing, lighting and guarding
  • Monitoring excavation in the highway
  • Monitoring reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
  • Monitoring reinstatement of sub-base and base in non-bituminous materials
  • Monitoring reinstatement in bituminous materials.

The finer details

This qualification has been developed to enhance and assess your skills and knowledge in monitoring excavation, backfilling and reinstatement of construction layers with bituminous materials. This qualification forms part of our suite of Street Works Initial certificates.

Training can be provided before assessment, but is not compulsory. The assessment will consist of a question paper and practical assessment. Assessment will cover:

  • Location and avoidance of underground apparatus
  • Monitoring signing, lighting and guarding
  • Monitoring excavation in the highway
  • Monitoring reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
  • Monitoring reinstatement of sub-base and base in non-bituminous materials
  • Monitoring reinstatement in bituminous materials.

If successful in meeting the required standards assessed, you will be awarded the corresponding qualification (non-regulated) certificates in:

  • Street Works Initial - Location and avoidance of underground apparatus
  • Street Works Initial - Monitoring signing, lighting and guarding
  • Street Works Initial - Monitoring excavation in the highway
  • Street Works Initial - Monitoring reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
  • Street Works Initial - Monitoring reinstatement of sub-base and base in non-bituminous materials
  • Street Works Initial - Monitoring reinstatement in bituminous materials.

You will also be able to register on the Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR), which is required under the New Roads and Street Works Act.

In order to ensure you are given the appropriate information and guidance to work efficiently and safely, you must complete the Fencing and Gate Installation Foundation course (FHW06) before moving on to this system specific course.

Recognised by

This qualification is recognised by industry and regularly reviewed by the Highways Authorities and Utilities Committee (HAUK UK). This qualification is not reviewed, recognised and monitored by any UK regulatory body (Ofqual, Scottish Qualifications Authority, Qualifications Wales etc).

Who should attend?

This qualification is for you if are currently working - or will be working - carrying out works in the highway.

It is particularly relevant if you need to be registered on the SWQR.
