This course will equip the student with an understanding of the Muirburn Code and its requirements and restrictions as well as the considerations needed for the safe and appropriate application of fire. 

The online module will cover the detail of the Muirburn Code to provide the student with a good understanding of when and where Muirburn can be carried out, and the considerations and notifications that must be included before any Muirburn.

The student will also receive a practical instruction on how to safely use all of the equipment needed for a successful Muirburn, as well as how to apply and extinguish fire.
 

The finer details

The course is split into 2 distinct sections, the online module and the practical module. Students must have successfully completed the online module before attending the practical module.

The online module will cover the requirements of the Muirburn Code including where and when Muirburn can be carried out, restrictions on where Muirburn can be carried out and the required notifications before Muirburning.

The practical module will cover the basics on how to safely use equipment, both mechanical and non-mechanical, the correct PPE, the on the day considerations such as weather and wildfire danger assessments, the safe application of fire and post burn considerations. Assessment will be via direct observation and knowledge and understanding checks.

Who should attend?

Those who will form part of a supervised team carrying out Muirburn activities or use fire as a land management tool.

Anyone who will go on to become a Muirburn Supervisor or Muirburn Planner.
 

What will be covered?

Online module – the Muirburn Code with built in assessments. (approx. 30 minutes)

Practical module:

Identifying the correct PPE
The safe use of hand tools
The safe use of mechanical equipment
Weather Considerations including Wildfire Danger Assessments
Identification and creation of fire breaks
Safely applying fire
Safely extinguishing fire, including post burn monitoring.
Communications
Team safety and wellbeing.
