This qualification is for those working with animals who need to administer veterinary medicines.
You will be able to demonstrate your knowledge, understanding and skills to safely use veterinary medicines with your chosen animal species group; small animal, livestock or equine.
This qualification provides nationally recognised certification for those working with animals to use veterinary medicines safely. By acheiving this qualification you will reduce unnecessary risk to yourself, other people and animals.
The finer details
This qualification aligns with the current legislation and Approved Codes of Practice (ACoPs) and covers:
- safe handling, storage and disposal of veterinary medicines
- keeping relevant records of veterinary medicines
- recognising signs of health and ill-health in specific animal species
- administering veterinary medicines to specific animal species.
This qualification is suitable for those currently in employment or in a work placement, looking to confirm their occupational competence and enhance/update their skills, so that they confirm their ability to meet legislative requirements within the land-based sector, their profession or industry body.
This qualification is a mandatory requirement within the Level 3 Livestock Unit Technician Apprenticeship (ST0938).
The qualification has three animal species groups to choose from:
- Small animals (cats, dogs and other small animals)
- Livestock (cattle, pigs, sheep, goats
,poultry, game birds) - Equines (all equine species, such as horse and donkey).

Who should attend?
This qualification has been designed for those working with animals within the land-based and veterinary sectors.
You will typically be employed in a role such as a farm worker (livestock), livestock unit technician, flock manager, shepherd, stockperson, herd manager, unit manager, game keeper, equine yard manager, equine groom, kennel worker, veterinary support staff, animal care assistant or pet retail worker.
Alternatively, you may be in a work placement for such roles.
This qualification is a mandatory requirement for apprentices enrolled on the Level 3 Livestock Unit Technician Apprenticeship (ST0938).
What will be covered?
The qualification will assess your knowledge, understanding and skills relating to:
- compliance with relevant health and safety legislation
- adherence to animal health management plans
- administering veterinary medicines safely and humanely
- storing and handling veterinary medicines correctly
- maintaining the health of the public and animals
- disposing of veterinary medicines safely
- recording the use of veterinary medicines
- preventing unnecessary pain and distress to animals
- identifying signs of health and ill-health in animals.
