This course includes identifying hazards and risks on the route, engaging with accredited road marshals, and using a recognised system for safe engagement with other road users during an event.
The finer details
Session 1 will check the vehicle to be used and the skills of the rider with 4 assessed bike handling tasks.
Session 2 is classroom-based session looking at the legislation for stopping traffic, engaging with accredited marshals and health and safety.
Session 3 looks the Caterpillar system of moto marshalling.
Session 4 is a theoretical and practical process to recce a route for an event.
Session 5 is a practical assessment of bike handling skills and the effective use of the caterpillar system to provide a safe passage for a road-based event.

Who should attend?
Attendees who would benefit from this course would be keen motorcyclists who have or are interested in carrying out the role of a moto marshal during road-based events such as cycling, running events or charity ride outs. This course will appeal to anyone who organises or takes part in an event that requires a group of moto marshals to ride in a safe and recognised process to assist in the safe delivery of a road-based event.What will be covered?
At the end of the training the participants will be able to:
- Outline road safety requirements for their vehicle prior to taking on the role of a Moto Marshal.
- Demonstrate safe procedures when handling a motorcycle in a variety of assessed scenarios.
- Discuss the Health and Safety requirements for safe deployment at an event.
- Describe how to safely risk assess an event route and the requirement for a route Recce.
- Outline how moto marshals will interact with accredited marshals and other stewards at an event.
- Demonstrate safe use of the ‘Caterpillar’ system as a team member whilst using the correct radio protocols to be used during an event.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of learning through successful completion and implementation of the approved system for an event route by a qualified motorcycle assessor.
