The finer details

The course begins with a Zoom presentation introducing our organisation and teaching philosophy. On the first day of the in-person course, we will explore topics such as how dogs learn, their scent processing abilities, and providing feedback and coaching to handlers. We will then proceed to train the four key components of UK Scent Sports. All necessary equipment will be provided, and you only need to bring your dog and lots of treats.

Who should attend?

This course is aimed at Dog trainers, who currently teach Scent Detection and mantrailing or tracking, but are looking to expand their knowledge and add fun things to their classes and become part of a bigger UK based company that offers assessments and support. 

What will be covered?

  • Understanding the concept and principles of UK Scent Sport, Our ethos and its importance, ensuring Instructors have the knowledge and teaching techniques.  
  • Learn how dogs process scent and how they learn. As well as how humans learn and our influence on this.
  • Be able to confidently deliver training, workshops, and assessments. Understand why we use Kong and how to introduce it. Understand the concept and training techniques for teaching a search and retrieve on a catnip gizit. Develop the skills to train match to sample. Adapt and understand the different techniques for Trail ID.
  • Health and Safety for you and your clients.
  • Legal Requirements of running a business.
  • Instructors will learn how to train the 4 components as shown throughout the course, using positive reinforcement and negative punishment methods only.
  • Instructors will learn how to set up and run assessments and classes.
  • Instructors will have a clear understanding of positive reinforcement, negative punishment, shaping and chaining and how to use them within UK Scent Sport
  • Instructors will learn how to coach handlers using learning styles and engagement methods.
  • Instructors will learn how to adhere to H&S and Animal welfare when running workshops classes and assessments 
  • Our instructors will gain the knowledge and tools to be able to create an inclusive and positive space for handlers and dogs to learn. They will acquire the skills to create a supportive environment where success is celebrated.
