The Internal Tree Inspection Programme (ITIP) is a two-day course designed to develop practical skills in assessing the internal condition of trees.

Day 1 covers Visual Tree Assessment (VTA) and the use of sonic and electrical resistance tomographs. Participants take part in field exercises, group research, and practical sessions to explore the limitations and best practices of internal tree inspection.

Day 2 introduces the IML Resi-PD400 Microdrill, focusing on drilling technique, measurement curve analysis, and research-based evaluation of inspection methods. The course combines theory with practical application, enabling candidates to confidently use these techniques in real-world situations.

The finer details

The Internal Tree Inspection Programme (ITIP) is a two-day course combining hands-on practice with research-led learning. It covers Visual Tree Assessment (VTA), the use of diagnostic tools including the PiCUS 3 Sonic Tomograph, PiCUS TreeTronic 3 Electrical Resistance Tomograph, and the IML Resi-PD400 Microdrill, alongside interpretation of tomograms and measurement curves to support evidence-based tree management decisions.

Day 1 focuses on the role of VTA and its application, group research projects on sonic and electrical resistance tomography, structured field exercises, data interpretation, and concludes with a written assessment.

Day 2 builds on this with advanced data interpretation, further research projects, practical sessions with the Microdrill, and a final written assessment leading to a certificate of competence.
The course is designed to give arboriculturists the skills to carry out internal tree inspections with confidence and to help tree officers, consultants, and contractors identify and challenge outdated or poorly executed inspection practices.
