The Internal Tree Inspection Programme (ITIP) is a two-day course designed to develop knowledge, practical experience and understanding in assessing the internal condition of trees within a professional consultancy context.

Day 1 covers the role of Visual Tree Assessment (VTA) and the correct use of sonic and electrical resistance tomographs within the arboricultural profession. Participants undertake field exercises, group research and practical sessions to examine the strengths and limitations, correct application and best practice of internal tree inspection methods.

Day 2 introduces the microdrill, focusing on drilling technique, evidencing within report writing processes, measurement curve analysis and research-based evaluation of invasive inspection methods and failure criteria. 

The course concludes with a written assessment to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the correct use and interpretation of internal diagnostic equipment, ensuring trees are neither unsafely retained nor unnecessarily removed.

The Internal Tree Inspection Programme (ITIP) is a two-day course combining practical application with research-led learning. It covers Visual Tree Assessment (VTA) and the appropriate use of diagnostic tools including the PiCUS 3 Sonic Tomograph, PiCUS TreeTronic 3 Electrical Resistance Tomograph and the IML Resi-PD400 microdrill. 

Emphasis is placed on the accurate understanding and interpretation of tomograms and microdrill measurement curves to support defensible, evidence-based tree management decisions within a professional consultancy context.

Day 1 focuses on the role and application of VTA, structured group research and discussion on sonic and electrical resistance tomography, practical session for equipment uses best practice and data interpretation to build confidence in the interpretation of results.

Day 2 develops interpretation skills, further research-based evaluation of invasive inspection methods and practical application of the microdrill, including measurement curve analysis, evidencing within report writing and consideration of recognised failure criteria to support proportionate decision making. The course concludes with a final written assessment leading to certification.

The programme is designed to ensure arboriculturists understand and apply professional standards in internal tree inspection, ensuring trees are neither unsafely retained nor unnecessarily removed. It enables arboricultural professionals, especially Tree Officers, to identify poor standards of inspection and report production.

Course Objectives:
